It's all Greek to me.

I remember not knowing why sororities and fraternities were referred to as "Greek life," so I used to get very confused about that association. It almost seems arbitrary at this point to call it "Greek life" because they don't do anything remotely Greek, except perhaps the rare toga party, which is only because of the fact that their group names come from Greek. I think sororities and fraternities should be called "Exclusive Group Living" or "Purchase-your-Friends Life."
Yes, it can be very ambiguous but perhaps that the ambiguity stems from our experiences. I mean since we are students at a university and have some knowledge of the existence of fraternities and sororities we may have problems distinguishing between the two especially when the term appears away from the campus setting. But perhaps someone that has never been introduced to the "Greek-life" would not have a problem. This is just speculation. Also, I love Alison's phrase "Purchase-your-friends Life", it sums it up for me beautifully!
I wonder if in Greece the term Greek is ever ambiguous. Also I think it's interesting that we classify a lot of stuff as if it were from a certain place while if one were to go to that place it would be nigh impossible to find it there.
